i'm not sure if "withered corpse" is quite the right analogy. i think it's more like an "imagined opportunity" or something dreamed up that's unattainable. maybe crushes are ghosts instead -- the idea of romance *potential* without the body to locate it. and i think that's why crushes can be fun, because they may or may not be real, like ghosts.
in any case, people do spend far too much time speculating about the existence of both.
